Former Federal Reserve Chair of Kansas City and Vice President of the FDIC

Former Federal Reserve Chair of Kansas City and Vice Chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation Thomas Hoenig is the 2024 recipient of the prestigious Truman Medal for Economic Policy. He will receive the honor for his exemplary economic contributions during his 40 years of service. He will discuss the lessons learned in his career while taking a stand following one of the worst financial crises to hit America and how today’s leaders can navigate economic volatility.

Mr. Hoenig joins an exclusive group of past honorees: Paul Volcker, Janet Yellen, Alan Greenspan, Alice Rivlan and Roger Ferguson. The Truman Medal is awarded biennially by The Economic Club of Kansas City, Truman Library Institute and UMKC’s Henry W. Bloch School of Management in recognition of President Harry S. Truman’s establishment of the White House Council of Economic Advisors in 1946.

Former Federal Reserve Chair of Kansas City and Vice President of the FDIC

Thomas Hoenig is a Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. 

Mr. Hoenig served as Vice Chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation from 2012 until 2018 overseeing FDIC operations and policy. 

Mr. Hoenig was President and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City and a member of the Federal Reserve System's Federal Open Market Committee from 1991 to 2011. 

He organized and hosted the first Jackson Hole Economic Symposium for global central bankers. 

During his tenure, he led the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City during the Great Recession and the banking crisis of 2008 and 2009.  

Author Chris Leonard of “The Lords of Easy Money”, detailed Mr. Hoenig’s role during the financial crisis and the years of turmoil in banking that followed that crisis. 

Mr. Hoenig received a BA degree in economics and mathematics from Benedictine College, and a doctorate in economics from Iowa State University.
