One of the winningest Division I basketball coaches in the NCAA, Bill Self, gives an insider’s perspective on how college sports has entered a new era.

The NCAA’s transfer portal and Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) have reshaped college athletics, allowing athletes more freedom and financial opportunities. NIL deals have blurred the lines between college and professional sports. The transfer portal has introduced a new dynamic where athletes can freely move between programs. Coach Self answers whether this new system that allows players to transfer with almost no restrictions hurts or helps college teams, athletes, coaches and fans.

In 2025, Coach Bill Self enters his 23rd season at Kansas as the winningest coach in KU history with more than 800 wins.

Coach Self has won two national championships, 16 regular-season Big 12 titles, which included tying a KU and NCAA-record 13-straight from 2005-17, and eight league tournament championships. In his first trip to the Final Four in 2008, Self’s team won the title.

He is a two time Associated Press Coach of the Year and has been honored as National Coach of the Year by his peers.
